about

There's been a lot use of the word 'rave' during lock down, mainly with negative connotation. It really made me think about what it meant to me, growing up as a teenager in the U.K. in the 1980's and my first experiences of clubs and parties in and around my native Manchester. Of course the recent clips that are circulating in the media seem to show in many ways the antithesis of what we originally understood the word to mean, and yet in many ways the situation is similar: Mainstream clubbing and party going has become dominated by big brands and big money and as a result the lowest common denominator rules supreme. The pressure to be perceived as popular and successful is pursued so aggressively that it now permeates the atmosphere of many mainstream 'dance'events. Is it any wonder that this has been carried through to some of the 'illegal' parties we are seeing taking place?
The positive side for me is that this is undoubtedly a time of 'reset', and what better way to do it than to reconnect and project some of the values that made the birth of the original 'rave' scene such a positive movement?

"Autotélica" comes from the word 'autotelic'; that something or someone has a purpose in, and not apart from, itself. It's very much the way I have been approaching music since lock down. With the demise of gigs for DJs the main sources of income have disappeared. It's left me feeling less comfortable using the established infrastructure to "sell" music to DJ's, but also made me feel free to explore different sounds and grooves for their own sake, without pressure for them to satisfy anything external. As such I started to revisit some of the sounds and production techniques that were exciting me around the early 90's, albeit with my current perspective, and had a lot of fun putting this project together. "Panthemic" (Ode 2 The Old Skool mix) is pretty much what it says on the tin. In the spirit of DIY and spreading the love it will be released exclusively with no expectations and minimal hype as a 'free download' (or donate as you wish) on the Well Cut Records Bandcamp page on their next 'Bandcamp Friday'. There will be no formal promo as such, just a personal mail out to DJs who are friends of the label with the link at exactly the same time as it goes out to everybody else....

An accompanying video featuring footage from Quadrant Park, Bootle exactly 30 years ago (September 1990) is here if you'd like to put yourself 'in the mood'.
